Correct Bike Size

New Bike Adjustments

Repairs and Maintenance

M

Frame size will not affect the bike price (larger frames do not cost more than smaller ones) but it is vital to have the correct size.  It will be the difference between you being comfortable, enjoying your cycling and your safety.

M

Frame size alters your reach (the distance between your handlebar and seat and how far you lean forward on the bike).  Larger frame bikes have a longer reach.

M

A frame that is too big can be dangerous.  You cannot start and stop, or get on and off easily and if you hit yourself on the top tube of the frame it will hurt!

M

A general rule of thumb, for a road bike, is to have a 2-5cm

clearance between your crotch and the top tube when straddling the frame with both feet on the ground.  For an off-road mountain bike, you should have between 10-20cm clearance.

M

Bike sizing is also dependant on rider age, condition, weight, arm and leg length, frame geometry and where you intend to use the bike.

M

To allow for growth in children’s bikes, the child should be able to straddle the crossbar and stand on the balls of their feet.

M

Don't forget that we will set you up on your new bike before you leave the store and we will make necessary modifications and

adjustments.

M

All new bikes will need adjusting after the first few weeks of use.  Cables stretch causing gears to go out of adjustment, brakes become spongy and nuts, bolts and bearings may loosen etc.

M

This is normal and can be easily corrected during a full service by our qualified bike mechanics which we offer free of charge with every new bike purchased.  It is our recommendation that this free service is performed after 3-4 weeks.

M

All new bikes have a warranty period.

M

The most common bike repairs are to wheels, tyres and tubes.  It is normal for tubes to seep air.  Correct tyre pressure can be found on the tyre sidewall.

M

Tyres last longer, wear better, enable better braking, protect the rims and are definitely less puncture prone when tyre pressure is correct.  Tyres will need to be pumped up every 2-3 weeks and more often for a road bike.  Many people will pump their tyres every time they ride!

M

Be careful using service station air hoses as this is a common cause of blowouts.

M

It is important to maintain your bike and keeping it clean is very important.  If you use a hose, make sure that the water pressure is low so that you do not force dirt and water into places that should be kept lubricated.  A bucket of water and a brush or rag to wipe it clean is our recommendation.
